We’re eating fried congri’ [Conger Eel] at legendary fishing village Harvey Beach in Ironshore St. James. This seaside village is one of Montego Bay’s most popular places to buy fresh fish and other seafoods. Fish is sold daily and people travel from across the island from as far as the south coast of Jamaica to this place to sell their fish. We linked up with Richie at a car wash and told is he was cooking congri, a pot of soup and pork.

Congri Eel is generally eaten by fishermen and people that mostly live on the coast in Jamaica. While its not popular it is consumed when caught. Some people also fear the eel because of its size, similarity to a snake and perceived aggression.

Congers are scaleless eels with large heads, large gill slits, wide mouths, and strong teeth. They are usually grayish to blackish, with paler bellies and black-edged fins. Carnivorous fish found in all oceans, sometimes in deep water.
