In this walking tour we explore the Glacier lagoon in Iceland. Jökulsárlón (Glacier lagoon) is close to highway number one, about 370 km (230 miles) east from Reykjavík and considered by many to be one of the greatest wonders of nature in Iceland. Huge blocks of ice constantly break off the nearby glacier and large icebergs float on the lagoon. The lagoon has not been around since Iceland’s settlement; it only formed around 1935. This was due to rapidly rising temperatures in the country from the turn of the twentieth century; since 1920, the glacier has been shrinking at a dramatic rate, and the lagoon has begun to fill its space.
In summer, it is a nesting site for Arctic Terns, as seen in this tour. Skuas also nest on the lake’s shores in this season. Seals can be reliably spotted here throughout the year, swimming amongst or else hauling out on the icebergs.

01:26 - The pictures on the right show the same spot. The glacier has receded in the past 80 years.
02:00 - The river is called Jökulsá á Breiðamerkursandi.
03:40 - Amphibious boat.
