Thousands of temporary visa holders have been left stranded overseas after Australia closed its borders in March 2020. Many of these migrants have established lives in Australia and are now unable to return to their homes and families.

While the option for a travel exemption is available to those with compassionate and compelling reasons, many exemption applicants have been refused without reason. There is no criteria published for what is considered to be a compassionate and compelling reason.

In this video, Work Visa Lawyers' Principal Lawyer Chris Johnston speaks with Bettina, a subclass 482 visa holder who is stuck in Europe. Bettina is desperate to be reunited with her partner and dog in Sydney, Australia. She has applied for a travel exemption over 25 times and has been refused each time.
